'Aurora' is 40x40cm and she's named after The Roman Goddess of Sunrise.
The ancient Greeks and Romans believed that every day Aurora raced across the sky in her chariot, alerting her brother and sister to the breaking of the new day.
So the next time you see the Northern Lights (or more likely a picture of them!) think of the Roman Goddess and how this story began.
The turquoise and blue colours in this piece reflect the Aurora Borealis whilst the gold reflects the sunrise and the Roman Goddess.
I've given all my Mandalas celestial or mystical type names. I'd been drawing mandalas for a while but I began naming them after I ran out of ways to describe them. I couldn't keep calling them 'Green and Gold on dark green' ! Or 'Blue and Silver on dark grey'!
So I decided I need to give them names. It all began with my largest piece which I felt was such a celestial task that that name was easy! I should name it after the enormity of the challenge I'd just undertaken. Then all the others got given celestial or mythical names to do with the sky or the heavens.
